Updated: Jan 18

Warm up your winter gatherings with this delightful spicy hot cocoa. Perfect for pairing with Skills' winter-themed games, Hot Tip is sure to be a hit among your guests. Plus, you can easily package the mix as a party favor for them to take home!

We're giving credit where credit is due. We found this recipe online and gave it a shot ourselves. The original recipe calls for an 8-ounce cup, but since most mugs hold 12-16 ounces, we're going to double it to fit a typical American coffee mug.

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the cocoa powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.

  2. Add a splash of milk and stir until the dry ingredients form a smooth paste.

  3. Gradually whisk in the remaining milk and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until hot but not boiling.

  4. Pour into a mug and enjoy your spicy hot cocoa!

Scaling Up for a Party

To serve a larger crowd, simply multiply the ingredients by the number of cups you wish to make. Here’s a nice breakdown for a party of 20-30 guests, 32 servings:

  • 4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 4 cups brown sugar

  • 16 tsp cinnamon

  • 4 tsp cayenne pepper

  • 4 gallons milk

When it comes to making hot cocoa, 4 gallons is quite a large quantity to prepare all at once. Depending on the size of your pots at home, it might be more practical to make your hot cocoa in a couple of batches. This way, you can ensure that the cocoa is mixed thoroughly and maintains the perfect temperature for serving.

  • Consider the size of your pots.

  • Making smaller batches can help with even mixing.

  • It allows for easier handling and serving.

  • Consider instructions in reverse. Heat up your milk then stir the ingredients in.

Packaging as Party Favors

For a memorable party favor, try packaging the dry ingredients in a small jar. A 16-ounce or 1-pint jar is ideal for this purpose. You can purchase sets of 12 canning jars at Walmart for as low as $11 and other retailers also have affordable options. One jar can hold a mixture with the following proportions:

  • 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup of brown sugar

  • 4 teaspoons of cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

This totals 2 cups of mix, which yields 16 8-ounce servings or 8 16-ounce servings of cocoa.

Include a label with the instructions for preparing Hot Tip at home.

Instructions:

For every 8 ounces of milk, add 2 tablespoons of mix in. Milk can be microwaved in a microwave-safe mug, or heated in a pan on your stovetop.

This thoughtful gesture will remind your guests of the fun they had at your gathering and encourage them to recreate the experience!

Hot Tip is not only delicious but also a fantastic way to enhance your winter-themed events. Enjoy the warmth and spice with your friends and family!
